Storage

Storage refers to computer devices and recording media that can retain digital data used for computing for some interval of time.

Storage types

The main storage types are:

• Main or primary storage
  • memory - used for fast, short term storage
  • CPU cache - L1 or L2 caches on modern CPU's

• Auxiliary or secondary storage
  • hard disk - long term magnetic storage
  • tapes - long term magnetic storage
  • CDs and DVDs - long term optical storage
